A gimbal or stabilizer smooths out handheld footage that would otherwise shake and jolt with every step, using motors and sensors across 2 or 3 axes to counteract motion, for cameras, phones, and action cameras alike.

What to check before you buy

• Payload capacity: A phone gimbal holds a phone and nothing heavier. If you shoot with a mirrorless camera, or plan to, you need a model rated for that weight.
• AI tracking: Some gimbals track and follow a subject automatically, useful for solo filming with nobody else operating the camera.
• Balancing: Camera gimbals need balancing before each use, factor a few minutes of setup time before shooting, not at the actual event.

What does 3-axis stabilization mean?

A 3-axis gimbal has three motors that correct tilt, pan and roll, so the camera stays level as your hand moves. That is why a 3-axis gimbal produces smoother video than a simple selfie stick or a 2-axis stabilizer.
