Two different approaches

• Swatters — an electrified mesh you swing at insects. Immediate, targeted, and works on whatever you can reach.
• Zapper lamps — UV light draws flying insects onto an electrified grid. Passive, runs unattended overnight, and reduces the general population in a room.

Worth knowing before you buy

UV lamps are better at some insects than others. Flies, moths, gnats and midges respond strongly to ultraviolet light. Mosquitoes respond more to carbon dioxide and body heat, which is why they often go for you rather than the lamp. Models combining UV with a suction fan or an attractant lure work better on mosquitoes than UV alone.

Placement matters more than wattage. A zapper works best away from where people sit, in a darkened room, so the lamp is the brightest thing present. Putting it next to the sofa draws insects toward you.

No chemicals, no smoke. The advantage over coils and sprays is that these are safe to run around children, pets and people with asthma.
