M.2 NVMe or SATA — the question that decides everything
- M.2 NVMe — a small stick that slots directly onto the motherboard, several times faster than SATA. Needs an M.2 slot with NVMe support, which most machines from roughly 2017 onward have.
- SATA III — a 2.5-inch drive connected by cable, the same shape as a laptop hard disk. Slower than NVMe but works in almost anything, including older laptops and desktops with no M.2 slot.
Check what your machine takes before ordering. An M.2 drive cannot be fitted to a laptop with no M.2 slot, and some slots accept only SATA M.2 rather than NVMe. Your model number plus “M.2 NVMe support” will usually answer it in one search.
Worth knowing before you buy
Back up before you start. Swapping a drive means either cloning the old one or reinstalling the operating system. Neither is difficult, but both need your data safe first.
Heat matters here. NVMe drives run hot under sustained load, and Philippine ambient temperatures do not help. In a desktop, a simple heatsink is worth having.
