A gimbal adds bulk, another battery to charge, and one more thing to carry and pair. Neither option is free; the honest answer is that most riders and hikers never need a gimbal, and most walking vloggers eventually buy one anyway once they see their own bounce on a big screen.
If you're mounting an action camera from the SJCAM lineup to a helmet, chest rig, or bike, save the money and skip the gimbal. If you're planning walking-and-talking content, a compact gimbal is a legitimate next accessory, not an unnecessary upsell.
A Cheaper Middle Ground
Before buying a dedicated gimbal, try slowing your walk pace and bending your knees slightly to absorb footstep impact; it sounds basic, but it measurably reduces the bounce that digital stabilization has to fight, and it costs nothing. Combine that habit with a properly seated mount and a lot of "I need a gimbal" problems turn out to be "I was walking normally" problems instead.
