A smart doorbell alerts you when someone's at the door, with video and two-way audio letting you see and talk to a visitor from your phone even when you're not home.

What to check before you buy

• WiFi vs wireless chime: App-connected video doorbells need working WiFi and internet to notify your phone. A simple wireless chime doorbell needs no internet at all, more reliable but no video feed.
• Battery vs wired: Battery models install anywhere with no wiring but need periodic recharging; wired doorbells stay powered continuously.
• Storage: Check whether footage saves locally (microSD, no subscription) or to the cloud (needs an ongoing plan but backs up off-site).

Frequently asked questions

Does a wireless doorbell need WiFi?

No, a standard wireless doorbell pairs the button directly with the indoor chime by radio, so it works without WiFi or internet. Only app-connected models need WiFi. The Daytech DB33 video doorbell, for example, connects to a 2.4GHz WiFi network to send the video call to your phone.

Will a wireless doorbell work in the rain?

Yes, if you choose a waterproof or splash-resistant button, such as the Daytech DB25, DB34 or DB18, and mount it under an eave where possible. For extra protection against typhoon rain, add the Daytech DB-C1 clear waterproof cover.

How far can the doorbell button be from the chime?

It depends on the model and on what is in between, since concrete walls, steel gates and floors all shorten the range. Test the button at the gate before you mount it, and choose a long-range model like the Daytech DB34 for larger houses and compounds.

Should I get a doorbell or an intercom doorbell?
