Why a camera changes this

Cotton buds are used blind, and the usual result is wax pushed further in rather than removed. A visual otoscope shows what is actually there, so you only remove what you can see and stop when you should.

Important: what these are not for

Ear wax is normal and protective. It traps dust, resists bacteria and moves outward naturally. Ears are largely self-cleaning, and over-cleaning causes irritation, dryness and sometimes infection.

Never insert deeply. The ear canal is short and the eardrum is delicate. Stay in the outer portion where you have clear view, and stop immediately if you feel pain.

See a doctor for impacted wax, pain, discharge or hearing loss. These tools are for routine visible cleaning, not for treating a blocked ear or diagnosing a problem. Do not use them on anyone with ear tubes, a perforated eardrum or a current ear infection.
