The Short Answer
Most tracking drop-outs come from six things: light behind you, standing too close, a second person in frame, a blocked sensor, fast movement, or a low battery. Face the light, step back to 1.5 to 3 m, and re-lock with a palm gesture.
Saturday, 5:30 p.m., a rooftop in Cubao. You set the gimbal on its mini tripod, raise your palm, and start walking toward the railing for that golden-hour shot. Two steps in, the phone stops turning. You are now filming the water tank. Sayang ang ilaw.
Before you blame the gimbal, run through the list below. Most "sira yata" moments with an AI tracking gimbal turn out to be one of these causes, and most take under a minute to fix. The examples use the Hohem iSteady V3 Ultra, but the logic applies to every tracker we sell.
The Six Usual Suspects
1. Light is behind you
The AI sensor is a small camera. Stand in front of a bright window or the setting sun and your face turns into a dark shape with no detail to lock onto. Fix: turn so the light hits your face, or switch on the built-in fill light. Manufacturers of tracking cameras flag backlight as one of the biggest causes of lost tracking, and Datavideo's own explainer says the same.
2. You are too close
Under about 1 m, a small sway of your head looks like a big jump to the sensor, and you can step out of its view faster than the motors can follow. Insta360's tracking troubleshooting page recommends at least 1 m, and we tell customers to aim for 1.5 to 3 m for walking shots.
3. Someone else walked into frame
Consumer trackers follow one subject at a time. When your barkada joins the shot, the tracker may switch to whoever is closer or bigger. Re-show your palm to claim the lock again, or frame wider for group shots.
4. Something blocked the sensor
A passing jeepney, a pillar, a tall pot on the stove. Once the outline of your head and shoulders disappears, the tracker pauses. Most units pick you up again when you come back into view, but it helps to keep a clear line between you and the gimbal.
5. You moved faster than the motors
Running past the gimbal sideways at close range is a stress test. Slow down a little, or place the gimbal farther away so you cross less of its view per second. The Hohem GO listing itself notes it is not built for fast-moving subjects; it is a desk and live-selling tool.
6. The battery is low or the tracker is not seated
Tracking and fill light together drain fastest. The V3 Ultra runs about 4 hours with both on, against about 9 hours balanced and stationary. On models with a magnetic or clip-on tracker, also check the module is fully seated; a loose contact looks exactly like a tracking failure.
The 60-Second Checklist
| Check | What to do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Light direction | Face the light or turn on fill light | 10 sec |
| Distance | Step back to 1.5 to 3 m | 5 sec |
| Subjects in frame | Re-show palm to re-lock on you | 5 sec |
| Tracker module | Remove and reseat it firmly | 10 sec |
| Battery | Check level; charge if one bar left | 10 sec |
| Balance | Re-balance the phone, then re-center | 20 sec |
Gesture Not Registering?
Gestures have a shorter range than tracking. On the V3 Ultra, gestures read from 0.5 to 5 m while tracking holds up to 7 m. On the camera-sized MT3, gesture range is 0.5 to 3.5 m. If the palm does nothing, step closer, hold your hand flat and still for a second, and keep it clear of your face. Reviewers have also noticed that the stop gesture occasionally does not register on the first try, so a second, slower palm usually works.
When It Is Not You
If you have gone through every step and tracking still fails in good light at 2 m, check two things before sending it in:
- Firmware. Update through the Hohem Joy app. One reviewer's M7 had a panning issue that a firmware update fixed.
- Calibration. A gimbal that drifts or sits crooked can confuse the framing. Our guide on balancing and calibrating a Hohem gimbal walks through it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my gimbal track my friend instead of me?
Trackers follow one subject. With two people, they may pick the closer or larger one. Show your palm again to re-lock on yourself.
Does AI tracking work at night?
It needs to see your face or outline. In dim rooms, turn on the built-in fill light and keep the brightest light in front of you, not behind.
Why did my gimbal stop following me after a few minutes?
Check the battery first. Tracking plus fill light can cut runtime by more than half compared with plain stabilizing.
