A travel adapter lets you plug your devices into a foreign outlet shape, converting plug type without necessarily converting voltage, worth knowing before you travel with anything not rated for dual voltage.

What to check before you buy

• Plug type coverage: Universal adapters cover multiple regions in one unit; single-region adapters are more compact if you're only traveling to one specific country.
• Voltage conversion: Most travel adapters convert plug shape only, not voltage. Check your device is rated for both 110-120V and 220-240V (most phone and laptop chargers are) before assuming an adapter alone is enough.
• USB ports built in: Many adapters now include USB-A or USB-C output directly, reducing how many separate chargers you need to pack.
