The Short Answer
A solo travel vlogging setup that fits a carry-on is a phone, a foldable 3-axis gimbal with a built-in tripod, a clip-on wireless mic, and a power bank under 100 Wh. That covers walk-and-talk shots, hands-free tracking shots and clean audio.
4:50 a.m., Mount Pulag ranger station. The sea of clouds is coming and you are alone with a phone, cold fingers and a 20-minute window. You will not have time to unpack a bag of gear. Whatever you bring has to come out of one pocket and work on the first try.
That is the whole philosophy of a solo travel kit: small, fast, and able to film you without a second person. The core piece is a foldable gimbal like the Hohem iSteady V3 Ultra, which folds to about 16 cm and has its tripod and extension rod built in. For the general how-to, see our guide to filming yourself alone.
The Carry-On Kit
- Foldable 3-axis gimbal. Smooths walking shots and stands on its own for timelapses and tracking shots.
- Built-in tripod and extension rod. The V3 Ultra has an 8-inch rod; the iSteady X3 has a 205 mm rod. No separate selfie stick needed.
- Wireless clip-on mic. Wind, traffic and crowds bury phone audio. The Hohem MIC-01 weighs about 15 g.
- Power bank under 100 Wh. Airline-friendly and enough to top up phone and gimbal.
- Hard case. The Hohem V3 travel case (₱359) stops the gimbal arm from getting crushed in a packed bag.
Three Shots You Can Get Alone
1. Walk-and-talk
Hold the gimbal at arm's length, or on the extension rod for a wider frame. The motors absorb your steps, so the footage looks like someone else is filming.
2. Tracking shot on the tripod
Stand the gimbal on its legs, raise your palm, and walk through the frame. The AI tracker pans to follow you. This is the shot that makes solo vlogs look like they had a crew.
3. Timelapse and hyperlapse
Sunrise, crowds at Binondo, jeepneys at dusk. Leave the gimbal on its tripod and let it run. One honest note: Digital Camera World found the V3 Ultra's in-app hyperlapse a bit jerky, so for smooth hyperlapses, use your phone's own timelapse mode with the gimbal holding steady.

For backpacking, the V2S and X3 are the lightest. For a trip where the vlog is the point, the V3 Ultra's detachable remote and wider tracking range are worth the weight. The M7 is the heavy-phone option, not the light-packing one.
Before You Fly
Every gimbal we sell has a battery well under 100 Wh, so it goes in your carry-on without airline approval. Our gimbal on a plane guide lists the Wh rating of each model and the CAAP rules.
Packing by Trip Type
- Beach weekend (La Union, Siargao, Boracay): gimbal, mic, power bank, and a dry bag. Sand and salt spray are the enemies. None of these gimbals is waterproof (the older Mobile Plus is only splash-resistant), so wipe it down after. See is a Hohem gimbal waterproof?
- City food crawl (Binondo, Maginhawa): lightest gimbal you own plus the mic. Crowds are loud, so the lav matters more than the stabilizer.
- Mountain sunrise (Pulag, Batulao): gimbal on its tripod for the timelapse, spare power, and gloves you can operate a phone with. Cold drains batteries faster.
- Abroad with a tight carry-on limit: phone, gimbal and mic in one small pouch, everything else in the main bag.
Filming in Crowded Spots Without Feeling Awkward
The hardest part of solo vlogging in Manila is not technical. It is talking to a phone in a crowd. Start with voice-over: film the places, then record narration later in your room. Once you are comfortable, try walk-and-talk shots early in the morning when streets are quieter. A small handheld gimbal draws far less attention than a camera rig, and nobody blinks at someone talking into a phone on a stick anymore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel vlog with just a phone?
Yes. Add a gimbal for smooth walking shots and a clip-on mic for clear voice. Those two upgrades matter more than a new phone.
What is the lightest gimbal for travel?
Of the models we stock, the iSteady V2S at 263 g. It takes phones up to 280 g.
Does the gimbal need the app for tracking?
Not on models with a built-in sensor, like the V2S, V3 Ultra and M7. The X3 tracks through the Hohem Joy app.
