The Short Answer
A battery-operated smoke detector costs ₱339 to ₱649 at VMI Direct. The ₱339 Daytech SM02 links to Daytech alarm panels, the ₱535 SM06TA has a 10-year built-in battery, and the ₱649 SM20 sends a wireless alert signal. Most homes need one per bedroom hallway and level.
Most Filipino homes have no fire alarm at all, and a fire at night is most dangerous when everyone is asleep. A standalone smoke detector is the cheapest way to fix that: it screws to the ceiling, runs on a battery and sounds a loud alarm the moment it senses smoke. This guide covers prices, battery versus wired detectors, where to put them and what the BFP actually enforces.
How much is a smoke detector in the Philippines?
At VMI Direct, Daytech photoelectric smoke detectors cost ₱339 to ₱649. The price difference comes from battery life, alarm features and whether the detector can link to a wireless alarm panel for phone alerts.

Battery or wired smoke detector: which should you get?
For an existing house or condo, get battery-operated detectors. They install with two screws and keep working through brownouts. Wired detectors run on household power and are usually installed by an electrician during construction or renovation.
- Battery, standalone: like the SM21 and SM06TA. No wiring, no hub, and no outage risk. The trade-off is battery care, which the SM06TA's sealed 10-year battery removes.
- Wireless to an alarm panel: the SM02 works on 433MHz with Daytech alarm panels, so a fire in one room can set off the panel siren and phone alerts. The SM20 also sends a wireless alert signal. The Daytech TA06 kit sends app, call and SMS alerts.
- Wired: powered from the mains, often with a backup battery. Better suited to new builds and commercial fire alarm systems than to a quick home upgrade.
What is a photoelectric smoke detector?
A photoelectric detector shines infrared light inside a shielded chamber. When smoke enters, the particles reflect that light onto a sensor and trigger the alarm. It reacts quickly to visible smoke from smoldering and flaming fires.
All the Daytech detectors we stock are photoelectric. Smoldering fires, like a cigarette on a sofa or wiring overheating behind a wall, produce a lot of visible smoke before flames, which is why this sensor type suits bedrooms and living areas.
Where should you put smoke detectors in a Filipino home?
Mount them on the ceiling outside every sleeping area and on each floor, including the stair landing. Keep them out of kitchens and bathrooms, where cooking smoke and steam cause false alarms, and away from aircon vents and ceiling fans.
- Bungalow: one in the hallway outside the bedrooms, one in the sala.
- Two-storey house: add one at the top of the stairs and one near the garage door if the garage connects to the house.
- Condo unit: one between the bedroom and the living area is usually enough for a studio or one-bedroom.
- Sari-sari store or shop: one over the stock area and one near any back room with appliances or extension cords.
Daytech's product notes say the SM21 should not go in kitchens, bathrooms or other hot, humid spots, and the SM20 should sit at least 50 cm from light fittings.
Does the BFP require smoke detectors in homes?
The Fire Code of the Philippines, Republic Act 9514, is enforced by the Bureau of Fire Protection, which inspects commercial and public buildings for fire safety systems. For your home, ask your city's BFP station what applies.
Many condominiums and commercial spaces already have a building fire detection and alarm system that the BFP checks during inspection. A battery smoke detector does not replace that system. It adds a loud alarm inside your own unit or room, which is where most people are when a fire starts at night. If you run a business, your BFP fire safety inspection is the place to confirm what your space needs.
How do you test and maintain a smoke detector?
Press the test button once a month. The alarm should sound and the LED should flash. Replace the battery as soon as the detector chirps for low battery, and vacuum dust off the vents every few months.
The SM21 beeps every 43 seconds when its 9V battery drops low, and the SM20 beeps every 60 seconds. Humidity and dust in Philippine homes can clog the sensing chamber, so a quick vacuum around the vents keeps false alarms down. Never take the battery out to stop a nuisance alarm; press the silence or test button instead and move the detector away from the source.
