Your Action Camera Isn't As Waterproof As You Think

by VMIDirect Team on Aug 25, 2026
SJCAM SJ8 Plus action camera in waterproof housing being checked on a Philippine sandbar

The Short Answer

Most action cameras, SJCAM models included, are only splash-resistant on their own. Real underwater use needs the included or optional waterproof housing, typically rated to around 30 meters, and that housing is only as good as its O-ring seal.

Sabado, 2:47 p.m., a sandbar between Coron and Culion. Your barkada is doing the thing where whoever's still dry holds the camera. Third jump in, a thin fog line starts creeping across the inside of someone's lens. By jump five, the screen goes black. Nobody dropped it. Nobody hit rocks. The housing just wasn't sealed right, and the humidity did the rest before the saltwater even got a chance to.

That's the failure mode nobody warns you about before you buy. Browse the SJCAM action camera lineup and you'll see "waterproof" printed everywhere, but the fine print matters more than the badge.

What "Waterproof" Actually Means on an Action Camera

Two different claims get mashed into one word constantly, and the mashing is where budgets get wasted:

  • Bare-body splash resistance: some models tolerate rain, sweat, and the odd wave without a case. That is not the same as submersion.
  • Housing-rated depth: the number that matters for diving, snorkeling, or handing your camera to a kid at the pool. SJCAM's included housings on models like the SJ8 Plus and SJ4000 WiFi are built around the 30-meter range, which covers snorkeling and most casual freediving without extra gear.

The Part That Actually Fails: The Seal, Not the Shell

The plastic shell rarely cracks. What lets water in is almost always the O-ring: a strand of hair, a grain of sand, a fold in the gasket, or a housing that got closed in a hurry while everyone was already knee-deep. Check the O-ring dry, before every trip, not after the fog shows up. Wipe it, look for nicks, and make sure the housing clicks fully shut with an audible seat, not just a soft click.

Scenario Bare Camera With Waterproof Housing
Rain, sweat, splash Usually fine on splash-resistant models Overkill but safe
Pool, shallow snorkel Risky, not recommended Fine, within rated depth
Freediving, boat spray Do not attempt Fine if O-ring checked
Scuba beyond housing depth Do not attempt Needs a dedicated dive housing

Kung plano mong mag-dive nang mas malalim sa rating ng stock housing, that is the one case where a third-party dive housing is worth the extra spend. Everything shallower than that, the stock case is doing its job as long as you treat the seal with the same respect you'd give a phone case at the beach.

After the Water: The Step Everyone Skips

Salt water left to dry on a housing crystallizes into the exact grit that damages the next seal. Rinse in fresh water before opening the case, not after, and never open a housing while it's still wet on the outside; water on your hands is water inside your camera compartment.

We will say the honest part plainly: no consumer action camera housing is dive-computer-grade forever. Seals degrade with UV and heat, which is a real factor in Philippine sun. Budget for a replacement O-ring kit roughly once a year if you're using the housing often, not once it starts leaking.

Quick Pre-Dive Checklist

  • O-ring wiped clean and inspected for nicks
  • Housing latched with an audible, full seat
  • Lens port free of sand or hair before closing
  • Camera battery and memory card seated before sealing
  • Test dunk in a sink or shallow water before the actual trip

Get this right and a sub-₱7,000 action camera will outlast a lot of "premium" phone cases at the same beach trip. Get it wrong and even the most expensive housing on the market floods exactly the same way.
