The Short Answer
For 4K action camera footage, use a microSD card rated U3 or V30 (minimum 30MB/s sustained write speed) from a known brand. Anything slower can cause dropped frames, corrupted clips, or the camera refusing to record 4K at all.
Merienda break, 4:12 p.m., footage from the morning hike finally loading onto a laptop. Half the clips play fine. Then one stutters, freezes, and the file just ends mid-frame, gone. Walang paalam. The camera was fine, the card was not, and now there's a hole in an otherwise good edit.
This is the single most common reason people think their 4K action camera is defective when the actual problem sits in a ₱300 accessory, not the ₱6,000 device.
Speed Class, Decoded Without the Jargon
MicroSD cards carry two separate speed ratings, and only one of them matters for video:
- Class 10 / U1: minimum 10MB/s sustained write. Fine for 1080p, not reliable for 4K.
- U3: minimum 30MB/s sustained write. The realistic floor for smooth 4K30.
- V30: also guarantees 30MB/s, but under the newer Video Speed Class standard, which is generally the more trustworthy label to look for on a card marketed for cameras and drones.
- V60 / V90: only necessary for 4K60+ or high-bitrate modes; overkill for most SJCAM shooting but not wasted money if the card is dual-purpose with a drone.
Capacity Isn't the Same Question as Speed
A 128GB card that's slow is still slow. Buying a bigger card does not fix stutter; it just means you can film longer before you notice the problem. Match speed class first, then pick capacity based on how much footage you actually shoot between transfers, generally 64-128GB for a weekend, 256GB if you're filming multi-day trips without a laptop to offload to.

Unbranded "4K-rated" cards sold suspiciously cheap online are a known source of exactly this problem: they pass a quick format test, then fail under sustained 4K write load an hour into a hike. This is not brand snobbery, it's a documented failure pattern with counterfeit and no-name cards. Buy from a reputable brand, check the actual printed speed class on the card itself (not just the packaging), and format the card in-camera before your first real shoot, not on a laptop.
One more honest caveat: even a correctly rated card degrades with heavy write cycles over time, especially in continuous loop-recording setups like a moto dashcam. If a card that used to work fine starts dropping frames after a year of daily use, that's wear, not a camera fault, and it's a ₱300-800 fix, not a reason to blame the hardware.
