If your speakers are passive (no power cord of their own), get an audio mixer with a built-in amplifier, such as the ₱6,229 XTUGA LMX6 with 60W x 2 and two wireless mics. If your speakers are active, or you already have an amplifier, an unpowered mixer like the ₱3,359 XTUGA EV6 or ₱4,649 LXT8 is enough.
Churches, schools, barangay halls and small event setups in the Philippines usually ask the same question: do I need a mixer, an amplifier, or one box that does both? The answer depends on the speakers you already have. This guide explains the difference, shows how many channels you need, and compares the XTUGA mixers we stock with live prices.
What is the difference between a powered mixer and a mixer plus amplifier?
A powered mixer has the amplifier built in, so it drives passive speakers directly from one box. An unpowered mixer only blends and shapes the sound, so it needs active speakers or a separate power amplifier.
A powered mixer keeps the setup simple: fewer boxes, fewer cables and less to carry. A separate mixer and amplifier gives you more freedom to upgrade one part later, for example a bigger amplifier for a larger hall.
Do I need an amplifier if I have active speakers?
No. Active speakers have their own amplifier inside, which is why they plug into the wall. Connect an unpowered mixer's main output to them. A second amplifier is unnecessary and can damage the speakers if wired wrongly.
Check the back of your speakers. If there is a power cord and a volume knob, they are active. If there are only speaker terminals or a speakON jack and no power cord, they are passive and need an amplifier or powered mixer.
How many channels does my mixer need?
Count every microphone, instrument and playback source you will use at the same time, then add one or two spare channels. A small church with two mics, a keyboard and a laptop needs about six channels.
- 4 channels: a solo singer, a host and background music.
- 6 channels: a small worship team, a classroom or a party.
- 8 to 12 channels: a full band or a hall with several speakers and mics.
What is 48V phantom power, and do I need it?
Phantom power is a 48V supply that a mixer sends through the XLR cable to run condenser microphones. You need it only for condenser mics. Dynamic mics and wireless mic receivers work without it, so leave it off for those.
All the XTUGA mixers in the table below except the PM1202, whose page does not list it, supply 48V phantom power, so you can use a condenser mic on a choir or acoustic guitar.

What is the best audio mixer for a church or small event?
For a small church with passive speakers, the ₱6,229 XTUGA LMX6 covers everything: mixer, amplifier and two wireless mics. With active speakers, the ₱4,649 LXT8 gives eight channels and two aux sends for main speakers and stage monitors.
The aux sends matter on a stage. They let you send a separate mix to the monitor speakers facing the singers, so the worship team can hear themselves without turning up the main speakers. Our sound system guide covers speakers and room size.
Audio mixer or audio interface: which do you need?
A mixer blends live sound for speakers in a room. An audio interface sends clean microphone audio into a computer for recording or streaming. Mixers with a USB sound card, like the BM6, can do a bit of both.
If you mainly record or stream with one or two mics, a dedicated audio interface is simpler. See our sound card guide for those models.
