Wh, Not mAh, Is What Airport Security Checks
Milliamp-hours (mAh) tell you how much charge a power bank holds. Watt-hours (Wh) tell you how much energy that charge represents, and that's the number aviation regulators actually regulate. The conversion is simple:
Wh = (mAh × Voltage) ÷ 1,000
Most power banks run at 3.7V internally, even if the box lists a 5V output. A 20,000mAh power bank at 3.7V works out to about 74Wh, comfortably under the no-approval threshold. Push the voltage assumption to 5V and the same 20,000mAh unit reads closer to 100Wh, right at the line. That gap is exactly why CAAP tells travelers to check the printed Wh rating directly rather than doing the math themselves from mAh alone.
