Can a Motion Sensor Really Tell You When Lola Gets Out of Bed?

by VMIDirect Team on Aug 10, 2026
Daytech motion sensor mounted near a bed in a Filipino bedroom for elderly night-time fall alerts

The Short Answer

Yes. The Daytech HW03/HW06 motion sensor detects movement across its infrared field and alerts a receiver up to 500 feet away in open area, so a caregiver in another room hears within seconds when someone crosses it, such as getting out of bed at night. Placement relative to the bed matters more than the device spec sheet.

2:47 a.m., a small barangay outside Cebu. Marites hears the receiver chirp from her room down the hall before she hears anything from her mother's. By the time she's at the door, her mother is sitting on the edge of the bed, disoriented, trying to stand for a trip to the CR she's made a thousand times before, except this time her knees weren't cooperating. Marites got there in under thirty seconds. Without the sensor, she'd have heard nothing until a fall, or worse.

How the Sensor Actually Works

The HW03/HW06 uses passive infrared (PIR) detection, the same underlying technology in most motion-activated lights, tuned here for a caregiver-alert use case rather than security. It has a stand and mounting options for wall, doorway, or a flat surface, and a detection range that's directional rather than a full room bubble. That directionality is the entire trick to using it well.

Placement That Works vs. Placement That Doesn't

  • Best: mounted at the foot of the bed or beside the doorway the person must cross to get up, angled so the beam intersects the path to the floor, not the ceiling.
  • Weak: mounted on the far wall facing away from the bed, where it only catches motion after someone is already standing and halfway to the door.
  • Wrong: placed on a nightstand facing the wall, which technically "works" but detects nothing useful.

Mount height matters too. Too high and it reads over a seated or slow-moving person; too low and a fan or curtain movement triggers false alerts. Most caregivers get the best signal-to-noise ratio around chest height, angled slightly downward toward the bed's edge.

Ringtones, Volume, and the Two Models

The HW03 combines motion detection with configurable ringtones and can be muted so the alert only reaches the receiver, not the room, which matters if you don't want to startle the person mid-motion. The HW06 adds multi-language voice greetings and finer volume steps (0 to 80dB across four levels), useful in a household where the caregiver's receiver needs to stay audible over a TV or a noisy street outside.

Spec HW03 HW06
Ringtones 5 unique 14 unique, 11 languages
Volume levels 5, 0–110dB 4, 0–80dB, plus mute
Power Battery or adhesive mount 3 AAA batteries or USB
Best for Simple single-room monitoring Households needing quieter, more configurable alerts

Neither model is a baby monitor with video, and neither one distinguishes "sat up to check phone" from "sat up because something's wrong." It's a motion trigger, not a diagnosis. Expect some false positives in the first week while you dial in placement and angle, and treat that calibration period as normal rather than a defect.

Pairing It With the Rest of the Setup

Most families get the fullest picture by combining the motion sensor with a bedside SOS button for when the person is conscious and able to press something, and a door alarm if wandering is also a concern. Each device covers a different failure mode: motion catches unconscious or unreported movement, the SOS button catches conscious calls for help, and a door alarm catches attempts to leave the house undetected.

Specs verified against the current Daytech HW03/HW06 listing on VMIDirect. Reach out through our contact page if you need help choosing between the two models for your specific room layout.
