Does the Caregiver Alarm Still Work During a Brownout?

by VMIDirect Team on Aug 22, 2026
Daytech caregiver pager receiver glowing during a brownout, lit by candlelight in a Filipino home

The Short Answer

The Daytech caregiver pager and motion sensor run on local 433MHz radio, not WiFi, so they keep working through a brownout as long as the receiver has power (battery backup or a small UPS). WiFi-connected devices like a smart door alarm lose their remote phone alerts the moment the router goes down, even if the local siren still sounds.

Brownout hit the barangay at 9 p.m., no warning, the kind where you hear the transformer pop two streets over before the lights go. Joy's first thought wasn't the freezer full of ulam. It was her father's SOS pager. Did it just die along with everything else? She pressed the test button in the dark. The receiver chirped from the sala. Relief, and then a fair question: why did that work when the router-connected door sensor she'd installed the month before went completely silent?

Two Different Technologies, Two Different Brownout Behaviors

This comes down to what each device depends on to send its alert. The caregiver pager and motion sensor use dedicated 433MHz RF, a direct radio link between the transmitter and receiver that has nothing to do with your internet or your electric meter, aside from needing the receiver itself to have power. The door alarm, by contrast, pairs with the Tuya app over 2.4GHz WiFi to push notifications to a phone, which means it needs your router, your modem, and your internet service provider's infrastructure all to be up.

Caregiver Pager / Motion Sensor WiFi Door Alarm
Signal type Local 433MHz RF 2.4GHz WiFi via Tuya app
Needs internet No Yes, for remote phone push alert
Needs router power No Yes
Local alarm during brownout Works if receiver has power Works if unit has battery backup
Remote phone alert during brownout N/A (no remote alert feature) Fails without router + internet

Making the Whole Setup Brownout-Resilient

  • Power the receiver through a small UPS or power bank with an AC outlet, not just a wall socket. A basic 300–600Wh unit keeps a pager receiver running for many hours past when the grid goes down.
  • Don't rely on the WiFi door alarm alone for anything time-critical. Treat its phone notification as a bonus layer, and the local RF pager/motion sensor as the layer that has to work no matter what.
  • Test during a planned outage, not just during an actual emergency, so you know exactly how many hours of backup you have before you need it.

What About the Transmitters Themselves?

The SOS button and motion sensor transmitters run on their own small batteries (coin cell or AAA depending on model) and are unaffected by a brownout entirely, since they're not plugged into house power in the first place. The vulnerability is always on the receiving end: if the receiver loses power, the alert has nowhere to land, even if the transmitter itself fires correctly.

Joy added a small power bank to the pager receiver's outlet that same week, the kind with pass-through charging so it stays topped up between outages. It's not an expensive fix. It's the difference between a device that works "most of the time" and one that works specifically when a brownout makes everything else in the house go quiet.

Full specifications for the RF range and battery life of each Daytech device are listed on their product pages; check our shipping policy for delivery timelines if you're assembling a full backup setup before the next storm season.
