In a humid Philippine kitchen, store milk powder, coffee, sugar and cereal in a container with a silicone seal, not a twist-tied bag or a loose-lid tin. Ankou one-touch containers at VMI Direct start at ₱235 for 800ml, about 350 g of milk powder, and go up to 2000ml.
Open a pack of powdered milk in July and by the next week it can be clumping. Coffee goes flat, crackers turn soft, sugar draws ants, and rice can grow weevils in the bin. The cause is the same in most Filipino homes: warm, humid air reaching food that was never sealed properly. An airtight container does not stop food from aging, but it keeps moisture, ants and pests out. This guide explains what makes a container airtight, which size fits which food, and what we stock, with live prices.
Why does food spoil faster in a humid kitchen?
Dry food absorbs moisture from the air. Milk powder and sugar clump, crackers and chips go soft, coffee loses aroma, and damp grains attract weevils and mold. A container that keeps outside air away slows all of this down.
Ants are the other problem. They follow the smell of sugar and milk powder through the smallest gap, which is why a box with a loose lid or a clip-sealed bag rarely keeps them out for long.
What makes a food container airtight?
A silicone gasket in the lid that presses firmly against the rim when closed. Without a gasket, or with a cracked or dirty one, air gets through. A snap-on lid or a screw cap without a seal is not airtight.
Ankou containers use a one-touch button: press it and the lid locks the silicone seal against the rim, pull the pop-up tab and it lifts the seal to open. That makes it easy to close properly every time, even with one hand while holding a baby or a pan.

Which container size do I need for milk powder?
Match the container to the can. The 800ml Ankou holds about 350 g of milk powder, so it suits small cans and travel. For a large can, choose a 2000ml container; the square 2000ml is listed for about 900 g.
Leave a little room at the top so the scoop and holder fit without pressing into the powder. The holder keeps the scoop out of the milk between feeds, which is cleaner than burying it inside. Keep the original can label or write the brand and expiry date on tape on the container.
Can I store rice in these containers?
Yes, for the rice you use in a few days or a week. A 2000ml container holds about a kilo. A full sack needs a larger bin with a tight lid, kept off the floor in a cool, dry spot.
Refill the small container from the sack as you go. That keeps the daily rice sealed and makes it easy to spot weevils early, because you can see through the clear body.
Are Ankou containers microwave safe?
No. They are for dry storage only. Ankou lists the body as safe up to about 80°C and the lid up to about 70°C. Heat above that can warp the silicone seal, and a warped seal is no longer airtight.
For food you heat at work or school, use a microwavable lunch box instead. See our lunch box collection and the wheat straw bento meal prep guide.
How do I keep a container airtight?
Keep the seal and the rim clean, because a few grains or some powder where they meet will let air in. Take the lid apart to wash it, and let every part dry completely before refilling.
- Wash with cool or warm water, not boiling water, to protect the seal.
- Dry the gasket fully. Trapped water is the most common reason powder clumps inside a sealed container.
- Check the seal every few months. If it is stretched or cracked, the container is no longer airtight.
- Wipe sugar and milk powder off the outside so ants have nothing to follow.
Plastic, glass or stainless steel?
For a pantry, clear BPA-free plastic is light, unbreakable and lets you see what is left. Glass jars work if their lids have a proper seal. Stainless steel suits lunch boxes better than pantry storage, because you cannot see inside.
Whatever the material, the seal decides whether the container is airtight. A glass jar with a loose metal lid lets in as much humid air as a plastic tub with no gasket.
